Golf – Is It An Art?
I hope this article sparks a thought in your head furthermore enables you to be in fact inspired to play better golf… YOUR WAY!
Not the text book teachings.
Not the typical “you must do x, y, z” if you want to be a great young golfer or turn professional or slash your handicap to beat your friends.
Art, sport, golf and the human spirit…
When I was younger I used to carry around a drawing pad, some pencils and pastels and find beauty in so many things.
Art, after my tennis career was my adjoining true love.
Many of you will already know my history with sport, starting with elite tennis that ended prematurely at undistorted 13 years old due to Glandular fever (mono), unless I won’t bore you with it again. Soon after a vague recovery, I picked ascend table tennis which was of course second nature to my God-given talent of hand-eye co-ordination and athleticism which I was fortunate to realize including be “spotted” at a young age.
After I stopped playing tennis when I was young, I followed my heart and began drawing, sketching and painting again. I had always bot pretty artistic, but when tennis took over, my craftiness halted.I became a very good table tennis player, winning national and provincial events. I soon got bored since of the lack of fulfilment and challenge it afforded me. So shortly after table tennis I began sketching again. In the few years between tennis and taking up golf, art slowed down drastically to practically non-existent being I was competing in junior golf tournaments and youth golf championships.”What a waste” my mother would say, “you could have gone to art school instead of playing sport” (She shut up after I was winning).
When I decided to stop playing on the professional golf circuits a few years back, eventually my thoughts of drawing began again and out came the pencils. I drew some of my best stuff shortly after giving up the tour occasion staying in a elegant seaside town in the UK.But I stopped…. I still am unsure why.
Recently it has hit me same a sledgehammer, that I should be doing this again and there is rejection rational art, golf, coaching and education can’t all co-exist.In fact, after pondering this, I accept come on to realize that frolic for me, and indeed golf, is a form like art. It takes creativity, being proficient to see and feel things others do not. The golf swing itself is artwork.
Having a different perspective on life reflects on the golf course too. Maybe this is why art has always been nudged out, agency for me playing competitive dally is a vessel for my true human spirt to shine and it is when I hold most alive.
Just like Bubba Watson especially.
He sees each and every golf shot like a break tarpaulin to draw what he wants near it.He has fun, but he is an artist.Phil Mickleson is the same.
And many of the crest tour pros in their own ways are artists too.
OK, so not everybody has an star inside, waiting to salvo extinguished of them, however I urge you to consider this;
Golf is an art and I necessity you to genuinely express yourself on and off the golf course.
